چکیده

In this paper we will discuss the problem of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR) and show that the idea of a Single Source Model established by Erlykin and Wolfendale (1997) to explain the features seen in cosmic ray energy spectra around the 1015 eV region can be successfully applied also for the much higher energies. The propagation of UHECR (of energies higher than 1019 eV) in extragalactic magnetic fields can no longer be described as a random walk (diffusion) process and the transition to rectilinear propagation gives a possible explanation for the so-called Greisen-ZatzepinKuzmin (GZK) cut-off which still remains an open question after almost 40 years. A transient “single source” located at a particular distance and producing UHECR for a finite time is the proposed solution. c © Central European Science Journals. All rights reserved.

Propagation of ultra high energy cosmic rays

We briefly describe the energy loss processes of ultrahigh energy protons, heavier nuclei and gamma rays in interactions with the universal photon fields of the Universe. We then discuss the modification of the accelerated cosmic ray energy spectrum in propagation by the energy loss processes and the charged cosmic ray scattering in the extragalactic magnetic fields. The energy lost by the ultr...

Ultra-high Energy Cosmic Ray Sources and Large Scale Magnetic Fields

Protons of energies up to ∼ 1020 eV can be subject to significant deflection and energy dependent time delay in lage scale extragalactic or halo magnetic fields of strengths comparable to current upper limits. By performing 3-dimensional Monte Carlo simulations of nucleon propagation, we show how observations of arrival direction and time distributions can be used to measure the structure and s...

Origin of ultra-high energy cosmic rays in the era of Auger and Telescope Array

The origin of ultra-high energy cosmic rays is discussed in light of the latest observational results from the Pierre Auger Observatory, highlighting potential astrophysical sources such as active galactic nuclei, gamma-ray bursts, and clusters of galaxies. Key issues include their energy budget, the acceleration and escape of protons and nuclei, and their propagation in extragalactic radiation...

Studies of the UHECR propagation in the Galactic Magnetic Field

We present the results of simulations of the ultra-high energy cosmic ray (UHECR) propagation in the Galactic magnetic field (GMF). Different assumptions on the large-scale GMF structure and/or primary particle lead to distinctly different deflection patterns of the highest energy cosmic rays (CR). The GMF modifies the exposure of an UHECR experiment to the extragalactic sky. We estimated these...

Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays from Quasar Remnants

One of the models recently proposed to explain the origin of the ultra high energy cosmic rays assumes that these particles may be accelerated by the electromotive force around presently inactive quasar remnants. We study predictions for large and small scale ultra high energy cosmic ray arrival direction anisotropies in a scenario where the particles are injected with a mono-energetic spectrum...
